Hurst Hemi Under Glass Collection – The high-riding ‘Cudas To Be Auctioned

Hurst-Hemi-Under-Glass-CollectionMecum Auctions is taking the gavel to Chicago this Oct. 10-12 with 1,000 vehicles expected to cross the block at the breathtaking Schaumburg Convention Center. The lineup is already fraught with headline-worthy consignments including the most famous wheel-standers in drag racing history– the Hurst Hemi Under Glass Collection – as well as the one-of-a-kind, factory-styling Corvette gifted to Harley J. Earl, a man often considered to be one of the most significant innovators in the history of the American automobile.

For all who don’t know, the Hurst Hemi Under Glass Collection is a group of four Barracuda-based powerhouses built by Bob Riggle that appeared as crowd-thrilling wheel-standers at major events across North America from 1965-75 and then again from 1992 until 2009. Each of the four cars is built with the same over-sized engine in the rear, visible beneath the back window, hence their “Hemi Under Glass” moniker. The excessive power of the engines coupled with the uneven weight distribution allows the cars to scream down the track in excess of 100 mph with noses skyward and sparks flying from their track-skimming rear ends. Offered together as one lot from the Bill Sefton Collection, these history-making cars are still fully capable of thrilling any car-loving crowd. Bob Riggle and Hurst’s famous “Shifter Girl” Linda Vaughn will be onsite to sign autographs during the auction. Read more!

1973 Plymouth Barracuda in Subleme Green

1973-Plymouth-Barracuda-in-Subleme-GreenWell, well, well, this 1973 Cuda in Subleme Green is a great two-door car that was manufactured by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation. The 1970–1974 E-body Barracuda, no longer Valiant-based, was available as a coupe and a convertible, both of which were very different from the previous models. With a new grille, single headlights, and four circular taillights for 1972, the Barracuda would remain basically unchanged through 1974. The final model year for the Barracuda was 1974.

Under the hood you can see a crate 360ci Engine. The trans is automatic with Posi-Traction Rear End with 3:23. There’s not much to say about this badass car, but the Subleme Green paint really makes it stand out. Check out the chrome elements, too. Other upgrades are as follows: Read more!

1971 Plymouth Barracuda Cuda in Black and Yellow

1971-Plymouth-Barracuda-Cuda-in-Black-and-YellowThe story of this 1971 Plymouth Barracuda Cuda is very interesting. 27 years ago, this car was in pieces, when the owner purchased it. He bought a 1970 barracuda convertible, and had collected parts for 25 years, investing more than 238k to build his dream car!

bbin十大平台网The 426 1968 block engine came out of a Hemi charger from back then. The Body was from AZ, and was nice rust free car to start with. First thing was to strip to the core, then be put on rotisserie, and have it taken to a bead blasting shop anf have it bead blasted, from top to bottom, and all its medal peices.

bbin十大平台网Then PPG Primer was shot, and yellow paint applied. Several stages of that process, and about 2 months just to paint and have it correct. All the other body parts were painted seperate, and then assembled, after. One of the best body and paint guys he knows did the work.

bbin十大平台网The date code 1968 real old school hemi block was taken to Indy heads, and what he asked was to have them build a street motor, that would run on todays pump gas, but still snap and run like the hemi the owner remembers back in the day. Indy heads put to gather a great engine, not cheap, but the best. From there the list goes on and on, the 18 spline manual hemi 4 speed, was bought at the Mopar Nationals, in Ohio, from the guy who is the guru on those, the Dana 60 4;11 gear, rear was gone thru with all new gears, ect from the rear end guru, ect.

When this point was reached, there were several questions, on the correct way to put this car together. Muscle Cars World admits the owner did a great job! He knew what he wanted as a final result, and that was a stock looking 1971 Hemi Cuda Convertable, shaker hood, rubber bumper, go wing, rocket. He wanted all the upgrade options that one could get on a Hemi Convert. and several you could not get. Read more!

This very same car was the cover/feature car for the 2009 Christmas edition of NZV8 magazine and now we feature it on Muscle Cars World. However, if you have read the article in the magazine, you should know that some things are different in the article to the specification sheet and this is due to some re-engineering and improvements which were needed. Since late 2009 all work and servicing has been done by C&M Performance in East Tamaki.

On the VIN it starts with BP27 which shows this car is a 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe Convertible. Only 12 of the 318ci 3 speed were made for 1970.

No expense has been spared with this car and owner states that over $500,000 NZD has been put into this build. Read more!
