Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti will drive a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 to pace the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500bbin十大平台网 on May 25.
It’s the eighth time a Camaro has been the pace car, starting in 1967 – and the 25th time a Chevroletbbin十大平台网 has paced the race.
Franchitti won the Indy 500 in 2007, 2010 and 2012, and he is only the third driver ever to win at least three consecutive IndyCar titles – among four championships overall. Franchitti’s appearance in the Camaro Z/28pace car signals a new start in his career as he embarks on a driver development role with Chip Ganassi Racing, which will use Chevrolet power in the 2014bbin十大平台网 IndyCar season.
“Dario is a true champion who has earned the respect of competitors and race fans alike,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports. “It will be very special to have Dario lead the field to the green flag in the Camaro Z/28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

The ChevroletCamaro Z/28 returns to its racing roots this week when the all-new Camaro Z/28.R race car debuts in a 2.5-hour endurance race ahead of the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. It will be one of the most production-based competitors on the track, sharing aero, engine and even axle components with the new 2014Camaro Z/28.
Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport will campaign Z/28.R race cars in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge. The Daytona race begins at 1:45 p.m. EST, on Friday, Jan. 24, kicking off the 12-race 2014 season.
“The original Camaro Z/28 was designed for racing and became an iconic performance car through its hard-fought victories,” said Mark Kent, director of racing for Chevrolet. “A new chapter in racing begins this week, as the new Camaro Z/28 makes its competition debut in one of the most hotly contested series in motorsports.”
Developed alongside its production counterpart, the Z/28.R incorporates the same performance elements that make the 2014Camaro Z/28 the most track-capable Camarobbin十大平台网 ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce-generating aero package as the production model, including:
Rear spoiler with wickerbill
Hood extractor vent
Rockers, wheel-house extensions and front tire deflectors

Chevrolet will auction the rights to purchase the first retail-production 2014 Camaro Z/28 and the first limited-production 2014 COPO Camaro this week at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector carauction with proceedsbbin十大平台网 going to education and veteran empowerment groups.
The COPO Camaro will cross the block first, on Friday evening, Jan. 17, and Fox Business News will air the auction live. Carrying serial No.1 for 2014, the race car features a new, LS-based supercharged 350-cubic-inch engine and a one-off COPO Ice Blue Metallic satin paint scheme. Proceeds will benefit the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans.
The Camaro Z/28 – with the vehicle identification number ending in 0001 – is being sold on Saturday evening, Jan. 18, to benefit Detroit’s Cornerstone Schools. The National Geographic Channel will broadcast the auction.

The 2014 COPO Camaro dragster is set to become a classic car in the future, according to Hagerty, who recently announced its annual Hot List of future collectibles.
The list includes 10 vehicles built in the United States, Europe and Asia, ranging from sportscars to sedans and crossovers that have an MSRP of less than $100,000. While most of the nominees have what it takes for a car to gain collectible status within the next 25 years, we we’re surprised to find that the COPO Camaro was also included on the list.

Chevrolet provided the first look at nine high-performance concept cars at the SEMA Show. The horsepower-infused range includes stylized versions the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray, SS sports sedan and a variety of restyled 2014 Camaros – including the all-new Z/28.

Through the end of September, Camaro’s total sales lead over Mustang was more than 5,000 for the year, putting it on track to be the industry’s best-selling sports car under $50,000 for the fourth consecutive year. The Camaro enters 2014 with revised styling and the new Z/28 model – the most track-capable Camarobbin十大平台网 in the car’s history.
The all-new SS returns Chevrolet to its rear-wheel-drive performance sedan roots, established with the small-block V-8 in the 1950s and enhanced with the Impala SSbbin十大平台网 in the early 1960s.
